To what extent is Wreck It Ralph a 'Post'-Modern text?
James's theory is that new ideas cannot be created and we recycle old ideas to make newer ideas. This is shown throughout Wreck it Ralph through the use of intertextuality, an example of this is the game sugar rush shows a resemblance to the game Mario Kart. Characters included in the film are Sonic, pacman and mario. The film also has the game Hero's Duty which again is very similar to Halo. This gives the idea that there are no new ideas and that Disney have used bricolage to upcycle old ideas. The film also has older games in the film like pac man which gives viewers a feeling of nostalgia.
Hyperreality is shown as it blurs between what is real and hyper-real. The real world in the film is cartoon which is hyper-real as well. The characters in the film are hyper-real and can be controlled by humans however the game characters can take over and control of their own lives. Throughout the film the characters travel through into different games through the wires, showing the separation between real and hyper-real. The real world in the games is high up as if the outside world is a god figure.
The film also shows hybridity, this is through the use of different games which are different genres. This shows that the genres are not the same throughout the film. When the genres are mixed something goes wrong meaning genres don't mix well. In the film Hero's Duty main character is a woman, who has a sad back story about her husband being killed. This isn't what is expected of a typical shooting game like Call of Duty. Sugar rush is also a feminine game but has women drivers, these games blur the genres.
